Purpose

The purpose for which the Corporation is formed are as follows:

  1. To initiate and support activities and programs relating to student access and success in all the regions of the University including tutorial support, mentorship and integrated learning;
  2. To initiate and support activities and programs relating to the advancement and improvement of excellent research and innovation in the University and on the African continent;
  3. To initiate and support activities and programs towards open distance and e-learning including the provision of electronic facilities and devices for needy students;
  4. To initiate and support activities and programs relating to long term sustainability of the university including investment in the next generation of academics and researchers;
  5. To initiate and support activities and programs relating to student funding including scholarships, bursaries and student exchanges;
  6. To initiate and support activities and programs relating to community engagement and outreach aligned to South Africa’s developmental challenges;
  7. To solicit, apply for, collect, accept, receive and otherwise raise pledges, donations, grants and contributions of money and property of any sort, without limitation as to value or amount, in furtherance of the purposes of the corporation, to hold, control, manage, invest, and reinvest the same and the proceeds thereof, and to expend, contribute, disburse and otherwise handle and dispose of same for such purposes, either directly or by contributions to other organizations or institutions organized for the same or similar purposes;
  8. In furtherance of the purposes of the Corporation, to purchase, receive, take by grant, gift, devise, bequest or otherwise, lease, or otherwise acquire, own, hold, improve, employ, use and otherwise deal in and with real or personal property, or any interest therein, wherever situated;
  9. In furtherance of the purposes of the Corporation, to make contracts, incur liabilities, borrow money at such rates of interest as the Corporation may determine, issue its notes, bonds and other obligations, and secure any of its obligations by mortgage or pledge of all or any of its property or any interest therein, wherever situated;
  10. To do any other act or thing incidental to or connected with the foregoing purposes or in advancement thereof, but not for the pecuniary profit or gain of its directors or officers except as permitted under Article 5 of the Not-for-Profit-Law.
