Tee it high, let it fly for education

Neatly tucked away on the premier Golf Estate of Mount Edgecombe in KZN, 108 golfers provided the backdrop for the second Unisa KZN Shaping Futures Golf Challenge that took place on 17 July 2015.

As part of the fundraising initiatives of the Directorate of Institutional Advancement these regional golf days serve as a stakeholder engagement initiative. The purpose of all these golf days is to share with the stakeholders the successes of fundraising campaigns towards key institutional projects.

The 2015 event built on the momentum and the excitement that was created in 2014 with the first Unisa Shaping Futures Golf Challenge in KZN at the very same course. Again, the role of the stakeholder was the highlight of the day as this is of the utmost importance to Unisa’s vision.

The overall winner of the golf day was Vish Naidoo with a score of 40 points. He received a Unisa blazer: David Farirai, Jason Govender (overall winner), Lynette van Niekerk, Dipuo Masago, and Makhosi Mbuyisa.

According to David Farirai, the Director of Institutional Advancement, the appeal for the support of alumni and stakeholders in meeting the ever-growing need for study assistance has become the nexus of what we do at Unisa because the university cannot exist without the student.

“It is an ongoing challenge to provide affordable and accessible higher education opportunities to the majority of Unisa’s students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds which can be met by bursary schemes and scholarships. The provision of student bursaries is central in facilitating learner support and ensuring that sustainable service is offered to the most deserving students with acceptable levels of academic merit.”

The event, which culminated in a dinner and prize-giving ceremony, was attended by captains of industry, alumni and pro golf players such as Karam Baijnath and Hilton Anderson. Guests were entertained by a jazz band who set the tone for the rest of the evening.

More photos of the event can be viewed on the Institutional Advancement webpage. Please also view our webpage for newsletter and other information of upcoming events.
